SUMMARY:The Qumran Library: Scribes and Scrolls
DESCRIPTION:Join Museum of the Bible\, in person or via Zoom\, for our speaker series focusing on topics related to Dead Sea Scrolls: The Exhibition. \nThe Qumran scroll corpus is the largest subset of the Judean Desert scrolls\, but much about it remains mysterious. Why were the scrolls deposited in the caves surrounding Khirbet Qumran? Who put them there? Are they a random or a deliberate collection? In this lecture\, Dr. Sidnie White Crawford will argue that the Qumran scrolls are one collection\, a scribal library belonging to the community of Jews that inhabited Khirbet Qumran\, and that they were deposited in the caves by that community throughout its existence in the first century BCE and first century CE\, until its destruction by the Romans in 68. The most likely identification for this community is a settlement of the larger Essene movement\, active in Second Temple Judaism. \nTickets include museum admission\, but do not include admission to Dead Sea Scrolls: The Exhibition. Guests who attend this lecture will receive 10% off the price of the other lectures. The discount code will be included in your receipt.

SUMMARY:An Appeal to Arms and to the God of Hosts’: Divine Blessing\, the Bible\, and the American Case for Revolution
DESCRIPTION:While the Declaration of Independence declares that such foundational rights as the right to life\, liberty\, and the pursuit of happiness are self-evident\, many scholars argue these “self-evident” truths are not as evident today as they once were. Behind these truths\, these scholars argue\, lies a biblical worldview\, especially the ideas of a single\, rational Creator and the inherent dignity of humans as bearers of the imago Dei\, the “image of God.” \nJoin us for The Bible and America 250: These Truths Are Not Self-Evident Lecture Series\, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States. This thought-provoking event brings together a host of renowned scholars and historians to explore the profound influence of the Bible on America’s founding principles\, values\, and institutions. \nIn this lecture\, Dr. Thomas S. Kidd looks at the ways American patriots justified their revolution.

SUMMARY:Updates from El-Araj: The St. Peter Inscription from Bethsaida
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 2022\, excavators at the site of first-century Bethsaida (Khirbet el-Araj) discovered a remarkable inscription in the floor of a Byzantine basilica reportedly built over the house of the apostles Peter and Andrew. North of the apse in the diaconicon (sacristy)\, the mosaic floor was renovated and included a medallion inscription to honor a local benefactor named Constantine and his two children. The inscription is groundbreaking in several regards. While the tradition regarding the primacy of Peter is heard in later literary and liturgical writings\, the inscription from el-Araj is the oldest archaeological evidence for the Christian tradition that Peter is to be considered the “chief of the apostles.” In this talk\, Dr. R. Steven Notley\, academic director of the El Araj Excavation Project\, will present an in-depth consideration of this fascinating archaeological find\, highlighting its historical and religious significance.

SUMMARY:“Steps”—Redirecting a Historic Path to Spiritual Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Join Museum of the Bible for a special event with pastor\, psychologist\, and author John Ortberg\, founder of the online spiritual formation ministry Become New. Drawing from his book Steps\, John will explore how the historic Twelve Steps—originally rooted in Christian practice and later adopted by Alcoholics Anonymous—offer a time-tested pathway for spiritual growth for every follower of Jesus\, not just those facing addiction. \nFor generations\, the church helped shape this transformative framework. Now\, John argues\, it is time for the church to reclaim it. \n“AA got the 12 steps from the church. And now the church needs to take them back.”\n— John Ortberg \nIn this engaging and practical session\, John will guide attendees through the heart of the Twelve Steps and demonstrate how humility\, surrender\, community\, and daily reliance on God can open a deeper experience of grace. With the pastoral warmth\, psychological insight\, and accessible teaching style that have shaped his decades of ministry\, John will help you see why Steps is poised to become a significant discipleship tool for our cultural moment. \nWhether you are exploring faith\, leading others\, or seeking renewal in your spiritual life\, this event will offer a compelling invitation to walk a proven\, hope-filled path of transformation. \n  \nAll attendees will receive a free copy of Steps at the event. \nReserve your place today for an evening designed to encourage\, equip\, and inspire.

SUMMARY:21 Martyrs: Knelt but Not Broken
DESCRIPTION:Coptic Orphans\, in partnership with Museum of the Bible\, is organizing this one-of-a-kind cinematic experience to honor 21 ordinary men from Egypt who made an extraordinary choice: when asked to deny Christ or face a brutal death\, they chose faith. Their story has reverberated across the globe\, inspiring millions and becoming a symbol of modern-day martyrdom.\nThis event invites you to explore the foundations of the early church as seen through the lived witness of today’s Coptic community of Egypt. \nSpecial Guest: Jonathan Roumie\, beloved for his portrayal of Jesus in The Chosen\, will be joining us in person to share his experience producing The 21 film and meeting the families of the martyrs during his recent trip to Egypt. \nDinner Honoree: His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan will join the dinner portion of the evening\, where he will be honored with the Coptic Orphans’ Leading by Example Award in recognition of his longstanding service and impact on the church nationally and globally. \nThis immersive three-part experience includes a walk-through display tracing the heritage of the Coptic people and the story of the 21 martyrs; a seated theater screening of The 21animated film\, with live remarks from Jonathan Roumie\, the producers\, and a martyr’s relative; and a plated dinner featuring a Q&A with Roumie and the presentation of the award to Cardinal Dolan. \nThe dress code for the evening is cocktail attire.
