SUMMARY:Why are there more abortions after Dobbs? Gen Z and the Pro-life Future
DESCRIPTION:Sixty percent of women who had an abortion said they would not have if they had received adequate emotional or financial support. Women who seek abortions are typically already mothers living in poverty and facing food and housing instability. Churches and non-profits are essential sources of support for these moms – but what can Congress do to help them choose life? \nJoin us to hear about the prevalence of abortion post-Dobbs\, the factors that contribute to abortion in America\, and how local communities are responding so pregnant moms can make\, and sustain\, their decision for life. Her PLAN is a project of SBA Pro-life America’s Education Fund focused directly on solving the “resource problem” for pregnant women and the local ministries that serve them. \nVideo and audio recordings of the lecture will be available on our website after the event. \nAs always\, a Chick-fil-A lunch will be provided. Please also forward this invitation to colleagues and interns who may be interested in attending this lecture.

SUMMARY:What Am I Doing Here? Rediscovering Purpose and Joy in Your Work
DESCRIPTION:What am I doing here? What steps can I take when at times I feel tempted to despair about my work? How will I be able to continue to do the work I love in a culture of such fracture\, polarization and contempt that only seems to be intensifying? At a time when finding joy in what we do seems so distant\, and resilience in such a challenging moment appears virtually impossible to create\, it turns out that there is more hope to be found than you might suspect. \nJoin us THIS FRIDAY as board certified psychiatrist\, author\, and speaker Curt Thompson\, MD\, provides practical ways of discerning what it means to faithfully live out the vocational callings that perhaps for many of us feel so overwhelming.

SUMMARY:Bear Witness: The Pursuit of Justice in a Violent Land
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we host a special discussion featuring author Ross Halperin and Dr. Kurt Ver Beek\, co-founder of the Association for a More Just Society. They will discuss the events chronicled in Ross’ book\, Bear Witness\, a compelling account of evangelical Christians who choose to live in faithful proximity to extreme violence and corruption. Drawing on Halperin’s reporting and Ver Beek’s decades of missionary work in Honduras\, the discussion will examine the intersections of faith\, violence\, accountability\, and the rule of law\, as well as the lessons these experiences teach policymakers who seek to respond to violence\, suffering\, and injustice here in the U.S. \n\nDr. Kurt Ver Beek co-founded ASJ with his wife Jo Ann and four  Honduran friends with the dream of transforming Honduran systems to serve the poor and vulnerable. He currently serves as the President of  ASJ-Honduras and collaborates with experts in Honduras to develop innovative solutions to strengthen public systems. Despite the challenges that Honduras has faced\, Kurt believes that justice is possible for Honduras. Kurt taught as a professor of Sociology for Calvin University\, where he directed the Honduras Justice Studies semester with his wife Jo Ann for 20 years. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Calvin\, a  Master’s in Human Resource Development from Azusa Pacific University\, and a Doctorate in Development Sociology from Cornell University. \nHe is the author of Call for Justice\, co-written with  Christian philosopher Nicholas Wolterstorff about  the theory and practice of justice. Kurt and his family have lived in Honduras for over 30 years. \nRoss Halperin attended Harvard University\, worked on Wall Street\, led a campaign to reconstruct the library in his hometown\, and worked under Mark A.R. Kleiman\, one of the world’s leading criminal-justice scholars. He started reporting Bear Witness in 2018 and has since spent much of his time in Honduras.
