SUMMARY:Bear Witness: The Pursuit of Justice in a Violent Land
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we host a special discussion featuring author Ross Halperin and Dr. Kurt Ver Beek\, co-founder of the Association for a More Just Society. They will discuss the events chronicled in Ross’ book\, Bear Witness\, a compelling account of evangelical Christians who choose to live in faithful proximity to extreme violence and corruption. Drawing on Halperin’s reporting and Ver Beek’s decades of missionary work in Honduras\, the discussion will examine the intersections of faith\, violence\, accountability\, and the rule of law\, as well as the lessons these experiences teach policymakers who seek to respond to violence\, suffering\, and injustice here in the U.S. \n\nDr. Kurt Ver Beek co-founded ASJ with his wife Jo Ann and four  Honduran friends with the dream of transforming Honduran systems to serve the poor and vulnerable. He currently serves as the President of  ASJ-Honduras and collaborates with experts in Honduras to develop innovative solutions to strengthen public systems. Despite the challenges that Honduras has faced\, Kurt believes that justice is possible for Honduras. Kurt taught as a professor of Sociology for Calvin University\, where he directed the Honduras Justice Studies semester with his wife Jo Ann for 20 years. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Calvin\, a  Master’s in Human Resource Development from Azusa Pacific University\, and a Doctorate in Development Sociology from Cornell University. \nHe is the author of Call for Justice\, co-written with  Christian philosopher Nicholas Wolterstorff about  the theory and practice of justice. Kurt and his family have lived in Honduras for over 30 years. \nRoss Halperin attended Harvard University\, worked on Wall Street\, led a campaign to reconstruct the library in his hometown\, and worked under Mark A.R. Kleiman\, one of the world’s leading criminal-justice scholars. He started reporting Bear Witness in 2018 and has since spent much of his time in Honduras.

SUMMARY:What Does Jesus Have to Say About _______?
DESCRIPTION:Learn to speak with the courage\, conviction\, and compassion of Christ in a culture of silence and shouting.\n\n\n\nIn a divided society enmeshed in seemingly endless culture wars\, followers of Jesus often feel like we have only two options: silence or shouting. But when it comes to the most significant spiritual and moral crises of our day\, might not the Gospel call us to something more? And what if this Christlike engagement proved to be a catalyst for healing\, civility\, grace\, hope\, and truth in our deeply unstable world? \nIn this five-week series of public forums\, Rev. Dr. John Frederick will engage in live\, in-person dialogues with guest presenters from across the Metro-DC region to discuss what Jesus has to say about: culture\, violence\, other religions\, speech\, and politics. Join us as we learn from Jesus to speak like Jesus.

SUMMARY:21 Martyrs: Knelt but Not Broken
DESCRIPTION:Coptic Orphans\, in partnership with Museum of the Bible\, is organizing this one-of-a-kind cinematic experience to honor 21 ordinary men from Egypt who made an extraordinary choice: when asked to deny Christ or face a brutal death\, they chose faith. Their story has reverberated across the globe\, inspiring millions and becoming a symbol of modern-day martyrdom.\nThis event invites you to explore the foundations of the early church as seen through the lived witness of today’s Coptic community of Egypt. \nSpecial Guest: Jonathan Roumie\, beloved for his portrayal of Jesus in The Chosen\, will be joining us in person to share his experience producing The 21 film and meeting the families of the martyrs during his recent trip to Egypt. \nDinner Honoree: His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan will join the dinner portion of the evening\, where he will be honored with the Coptic Orphans’ Leading by Example Award in recognition of his longstanding service and impact on the church nationally and globally. \nThis immersive three-part experience includes a walk-through display tracing the heritage of the Coptic people and the story of the 21 martyrs; a seated theater screening of The 21animated film\, with live remarks from Jonathan Roumie\, the producers\, and a martyr’s relative; and a plated dinner featuring a Q&A with Roumie and the presentation of the award to Cardinal Dolan. \nThe dress code for the evening is cocktail attire.

SUMMARY:Kingdom Finances: Stewarding God’s Resources
DESCRIPTION:Do you ever feel overwhelmed by your personal finances? Unsure how to steward what God has entrusted to you or even where to start? You’re not alone\, and this workshop is for you. \nIn a world where financial literacy is rarely taught and money stress is all too common\, this class offers a different path\, one rooted in Biblical wisdom\, practical tools\, and spiritual freedom. Together\, we’ll explore what Scripture says about money and how to apply it in everyday life. \nThis workshop will cover: \n\nCreating a spending plan that aligns with your values\nBuilding emergency savings\nDebt reduction\nCultivating generosity that flows from a heart of trust in God.\n\nThis workshop will equip you to: \n\nPractice the spiritual discipline of trusting God with your finances\nExperience freedom from the stress and anxiety that often surrounds money\nGrow in generosity and stewardship\nBuild a practical foundation with tools for budgeting\, saving\, and managing debt\n\nIf you manage your finances with a spouse or partner\, we strongly encourage you to attend together. Childcare will be provided\, but you must RSVP by January 9 to secure a spot. \nThis workshop will be led by a team with deep personal and professional experience in the financial planning space. Rooted in our faith\, our diverse professional and life experiences inform how we will teach and guide you during our time together. If you’re ready to stop surviving and start thriving financially rooted in faith and wisdom\, register now and take the first step toward financial freedom. \nCost is $25 to attend. If you are attending with a spouse\, please let Danielle know so we can give you a code for one of your registrations to be free. By asking participants to contribute financially\, even in a small way\, we’re reinforcing one of the core principles of discipleship: investment leads to transformation. When we invest our resources\, time\, energy\, or finances\, we show up differently. We take it seriously. Your contribution helps cover materials and resources\, but more importantly\, it reflects a heart posture of ownership. And as always\, if cost is a barrier\, we don’t want that to stop anyone\, scholarships are available.
